Did you know that National Honey Bee Day is August 21st? This special day is recognized as an awareness day on which beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from all over the nation celebrate honey bees, recognizing their contribution to our everyday lives in an effort to help protect this critical species.

According to Greenpeace, honey bees – both wild and domestic – are responsible for about 80% of all pollination worldwide. A single colony of honey bees can pollinate 300 million flowers in a single day. Also, 70 out of the top 100 human food crops are pollinated by bees, and supply about 90% of the world’s nutrition.

To help save the bees, there are some simple things we can do, according to the Bee Conservancy. Some ideas include planting a bee garden to provide food and safe habitat for them, avoid using synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that are harmful to bees, provide trees in your yard for bees to feed from, and more.
